In our age of software animation, people tend to get excited about tools, but forget to pay attention to the key elements and their work ends up not looking professional. The main purpose of sharing my knowledge today is to help change the mindset of how people animate.
To make sure you avoid this common mistake and your work ends up being not only professional but saleable, I have chosen Reallusion’s iClone, a 3D application used by pros and first-time animators like.
And what are these key elements? For me, they are camera movement, lighting, effects, and look-up tables (LUTs). I will explain each of these elements in due course, but for now, suffice it to say that even first-time animators need to address all these elements if they want to put their work on the right path to professional quality.
Crystal Bretz, modeler and texturer at Method Studios, tries Reallusion’s Character Creator 3 for the first time. In her walkthrough, Crystal models Dmitry Skvortsov’s concept of CD Projekt Red’s Leo Bonhart character from The Witcher series. Starting from a Character Creator base mesh, she refines the body, face and clothing details using the GoZ bridge from Character Creator 3 ZBrush.
Crystal also uses Substance Painter during the texturing process before posing the character using Character Creator 3’s Facial Expression Presets.

Animation is a competitive field plagued with battling budgets and short deadlines. Throw in the complexity of most animation programs or worse, lose control with the limitations of some programs that try to simplify animation, and the frustration level and cost are amplified.

Also, iClone’s latest version has boosted the quality of its renders, including PBR materials, Image Based Lighting with HDR pictures, and Global Illumination, and because of this, it has motivated us to start creating models of vehicles for iClone, that not just look good, but that thanks to the improved render features, help people with their animations.
So I included features like emissive materials or parts that can be manipulated individually. Objects like the doors, the steering wheel, the gear level, and the pedals are all interactive sub-props that can be rotated or reached by the characters of a scene. Helping to create convincing driving animations.
In addition, the 4 Wheel structure provided by Reallusion’s Physics Toolbox, allows one to actually drive the vehicles over the iClone terrains while recording their motions in real-time. It facilitates the animation of the vehicles, as the spinning of the wheel are automatically synchronized with the motion of the car, depending on its speed, while it follows the slopes and irregularities of the terrain.
This is an overview tutorial of the pipeline I followed to create these models and how they can be easily animated in iClone.
