I am Tobe. A songwriter, videographer, editor, producer and creative head of the successful children music project “Frank and his Friends” from Germany.

I dedicate myself fully to the musical and visual ideas of the show. So I needed to quickly animate our cartoon version without much effort. Since I do not have the time to fiddle around and read manuals, I came across Reallusion and their CrazyTalk and iClone software Anyone, who has ever tried other programs, knows how much work and computing power would be required to create an animated show, but by comparison, Reallusion has made it relatively easy for me.

Ars Technica: Replicas used game-development tools to bring its sci-fi world to life

Thanks to Ars Technica’s senior reporter Jennifer Ouellette who featured Replica, the new science fiction film starring Keanu Reeves. Catch the behind-the-scenes story on how iClone was used to bring sci-fi VFX to life.

They interviewed Executive Producer James Dodson on how he got big-studio effects on a modest budget.

“Maya is expensive and can quickly eat up a production budget just in the design and pre-visualization stages. A single four-minute pre-viz sequence can cost $350,000 or more. That’s why Replicas Executive Producer James Dodson brought in a cheaper alternative for those early stages: iClone, a suite of animation software tools frequently used by game developers.”

fxguide’s Mike Seymour interviews James Dodson on iClone & REPLICAS

Fxguide.com, vfx industry pro Mike Seymour recently talked with James Dodson, Executive Producer of REPLICAS, about the film and use of iClone for previz, mocap and postviz. Dodson shares the cost-savings, added-value and flexibility iClone provided to the director and production crew. Know more about Keanu Reeves’ direct involvement with the production, beyond the script, and more in this story on how iClone was used by the filmmakers from fxguide.

The team used iClone in the production of Replicas in three ways:
1. James Martin and John Martin led the previz team in visualising some of the action sequences such as the car crash in iClone.
2. There was also conceptual work around the AR infographics that Keanu’s character manipulates, that needed the software for the interaction to work onscreen.
3. Finally in post-production, iClone was invaluable in animating the robot when it gains consciousness.

 “…the benefit is in how inexpensive and accessible tools, such as iClone, are able to, democratize the entire process of motion capture and real time rendering – I am just addicted to previsualisation, and the level of quality and detail we can do for a few hundred dollars and still have studio quality results is incredible.”
