Ars Technica: Replicas used game-development tools to bring its sci-fi world to life

Thanks to Ars Technica’s senior reporter Jennifer Ouellette who featured Replica, the new science fiction film starring Keanu Reeves. Catch the behind-the-scenes story on how iClone was used to bring sci-fi VFX to life.

They interviewed Executive Producer James Dodson on how he got big-studio effects on a modest budget.

“Maya is expensive and can quickly eat up a production budget just in the design and pre-visualization stages. A single four-minute pre-viz sequence can cost $350,000 or more. That’s why Replicas Executive Producer James Dodson brought in a cheaper alternative for those early stages: iClone, a suite of animation software tools frequently used by game developers.”

Reallusion Cartoon Animator Innovates 2D Characters

360 Head Creator Turns 2D Art to 3D Animation

Reallusion reveals 360 Head Creator, a new character design feature for 2D animation software Cartoon Animator 4. Cartoon Animator (formerly CrazyTalk Animator) is known for its quick results combined with pro features for the easiest approach and workflow since 2008.  Cartoon Animator 4 will release in April 2019 with Smart IK, 3D Head Creator and Live performance capture (webcam facial mocap), all new tools to elevate 2D animation production.

Cartoon Animator 4 breaks through the limitations of 2D Art, and delivers a practical way for 2D animators to create characters with advanced animation along with vivid expressions. The 360 evolution streamlines the workflow for Head Creation, Expression Setup, and directly to the animation core with face key editing, puppeteering, and the timeline system.

fxguide’s Mike Seymour interviews James Dodson on iClone & REPLICAS

Fxguide.com, vfx industry pro Mike Seymour recently talked with James Dodson, Executive Producer of REPLICAS, about the film and use of iClone for previz, mocap and postviz. Dodson shares the cost-savings, added-value and flexibility iClone provided to the director and production crew. Know more about Keanu Reeves’ direct involvement with the production, beyond the script, and more in this story on how iClone was used by the filmmakers from fxguide.

The team used iClone in the production of Replicas in three ways:
1. James Martin and John Martin led the previz team in visualising some of the action sequences such as the car crash in iClone.
2. There was also conceptual work around the AR infographics that Keanu’s character manipulates, that needed the software for the interaction to work onscreen.
3. Finally in post-production, iClone was invaluable in animating the robot when it gains consciousness.

“…the benefit is in how inexpensive and accessible tools, such as iClone, are able to, democratize the entire process of motion capture and real time rendering – I am just addicted to previsualisation, and the level of quality and detail we can do for a few hundred dollars and still have studio quality results is incredible.”

Inc.com: This New Tech Will Spawn Billionaires and Almost Nobody Sees It Coming

Geoffrey James, the contributing editor for Inc.com, author and professional speaker, recently posted an article on Inc.com sharing his observations on real-time animation technology that will massively transform how movies and animated videos are made.

Reallusion’s iClone is proud to be mentioned as one of the pioneers of real-time animation technology alongside Unreal game engines. Based on Geoffrey’s research and experiences there are five areas where
3D real-time animation is disrupting established practices and establishing new markets.

Industry sectors like: Low-cost CGI and VFX Footage for Feature Film, Deep Pre-Visualization to Reduce Film Production Costs, Television Studios Located in Virtual Reality, Independently Produced Animated Features and Trade Show Kickoff videos.

For example, the latest Hollywood movie Replicas applies iClone real-time animation as a Previsualization tool to reduce production costs.

“Keanu Reeves used the iClone 3D animation software to reduce the shooting budget for his recently released film Replicas. Replicas is heavy on mixed live action and effects, which would have been prohibitively expensive if shot using traditional methods.”

CG Society: Creating a 3D Sci-Fi Short in 30 Days

DAZ User Harnesses Character Animation with iClone

CGSociety covers the story on how indie filmmaker/3D artist – Solomon W. Jagwe created his solo film NaEEXUS in 30 days by using DAZ3D Content and Character Creator 3 (CC3).

“I was able to create the film in the space of 1 month. This was made possible by the awesome 3D models and characters, that I used from the DAZ3D marketplace which are very well textured and rigged. I didn’t have to model any of the characters or environments. The character animation was made possible by the iClone Motion Live and iPhone Face Mocap plugins, together with Character Creator 3
 (CC3).”

Ferenc Vincze

My name is Ferenc Vincze, and I am a freelance animator and videographer. I was originally born and raised in Hungary, but am currently living in Germany. My profession is Agricultural Engineering, and I have made animations and short films since 2004.

I’ve learned communication technology and I have been working as a freelancer for 6 years. I made several broadcast designs for local television channels, produced experimental short films and 3D animations until I founded my own business called Rendered-frames.com, where I use iClone‘s animation suite, with motion capture, and Character Creator.

“I highly recommend Character Creator and iClone Motion LIVE for professionals and indies, because this software package has the best price/value ratio.” – Ferenc Vincze / 3D Animator

Character Creator 3 Tutorial – Creating NPC for Unity 3D with CC3 Game Base

Character Creator 3 (CC3) is centered to complete the 3D game character pipeline for the game dev industry. Indie game devs can now add highly optimized game character base for mobile, AR and VR developers; while also integrating InstaLOD’s model and material optimization technologies to generate game-ready characters that are animatable on-the-fly with multiple LOD outputs.

But how do we optimize our characters for use with realtime game engines like Unity?
